She informed me that my cousin might not be taking math again until March. It amazes me that a high school student would go from June to March without taking any math. Are the people who choose this kind of schedule really that out of touch with teenagers? I remember how much I would forget after two month of summer holidays. I can't imagine how much I would forget if I took 9 months off of math. From grade 1 to grade 11 (grade 11 is the final year of high school in Quebec), I had math class every day. The only year that it was optional at my high school was grade 11.

Sometimes I think schools set kids up to fail.

*Why is it that some people pronouce the word aunt like 'ant' and others say 'on-t'? I say the former. It wasn't until I went to university that I heard anyone other than Will Smith on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air say 'on-t' (well I probably heard it on other TV shows or movies but I only specifically recall Will Smith saying 'on-t'). Is it just within Quebec's english communities (I have lived in two of them; the west island of Montreal and the Pontiac, north of Hull) or is it more widespread that people say 'ant'?

Le 9 ah-oooo

My roommate is away for 3 weeks in Borden, Ontario doing some military training (she's a medic in the reserves) and so I've been paying her bills, checking her phone messages and checking her email. The other day I checked her messages and there was one in french about an interview on August 17th. But the woman said aout in such an awful way that it was like nails on a chalkboard. She said "ah-ooo" instead of "oo" (as in moo). I admit I'm not a francophone but there are certain things I know about the french language (at least Quebec french) having lived in Quebec all my life and having taken french from age 5 to age 20, and ah-ooo just sounded so so wrong to me. So does anyone know is this some Franco-Ontarian thing or something else entirely?

Who killed the electric car?

Along with An Inconvenient Truth, I want to see Who killed the electric car? I'm putting my money on big oil as being the culprit.

Stephen Harper is bizarro Robin Hood

Stacey commented here that she had noticed that more income taxes were being taken off people's paycheque since July 1st. I guess Steve had to find a way of paying for the GST cut. He must of thought long and hard, looked down the list of the conservative priorities and found that number 2 on that list, screw over the poor, (number 1 being help the rich) was the perfect solution.

Here is their brilliant solution:

·The lowest income tax rate was raised from 15 percent to 15.5 percent;

·The basic personal amount that all Canadians earn tax-free decreased from $9,039 to $8,639;

·The amount taxpayers can claim for their spouse or common-law partner decreased from $7,675 to $7,335; and
·The amount taxpayers can claim for eligible dependants decreased from $7,675 to $7,335.

For the record I am currently on track to save 26.97$ in one year from the GST cut. Like Stephen Harper keeps telling us.

I think I might buy a unicorn with all the money that I will save.

Bishop's Convocation (and omg unicorns!!!!)

Tomorrow afternoon Bishop's convocation is taking place and they have decided to hold it outdoors. I know that it gets really crowded in the gym and this causes the gym to be really hot (believe I know my graduation was so hot I almost passed out) but to have it outdoors not matter what is just silly. I completely agree with Stacey. It made me think of an episode of 30 days that I had seen a few months ago. 30 days is a show by Morgan Spurlock, the guy who made the documentary Super Size Me, which is based on a similar premise as his documentary. He takes a person out of their regular environment for 30 days in order for them to experience something new and different and possibly to change their point of view. The episode that Stacey's blog post reminded me of was the one where Morgan and his fiancee (now wife) Alex live on minimum wage (5.15$/hr) for 30 days. It basically showed that the american dream is dead. That even if you work hard, you might not become rich or even make enough to pay your medical bills. How does this connect to Oprah? Well by saying she doesn't believe in luck she's either saying that it was all hard work that got her where she is today or that it was some divine intervention or some combination of the two. So she's either implying that those who aren't able to improve their position in life don't work hard enough or god hates them.

Ironically it was only about a month ago that she had Morgan Spurlock on her show to talk about the minimum wage episode of 30 days.

Aside: I am such a miser. I tried the minimum wage calculator on the 30 days website (go to The Challenge and it's listed there). I can live on minimum wage with my current expenses.

Adventures South of the Border

Tom and I headed down to Newport, Vermont yesterday. Tom had some banking he needed to do and so we decided to tie this in with lunch at Wendy's and a trip to Dollar Tree. I really like Dollar Tree. It's one of those real dollar stores like Dollarama where everything is a dollar or less. The last time we went I found Michael Moore's book "Dude, Where's my Country?" for a dollar. This time I picked up two books that I would not have bought if they weren't a dollar; Leadership by Rudy Giuliani and I Am the Central Park Jogger by Trish Meili. I also bought Pez and Bubble Gum lip balm, Gobstoppers, mousse, floss and popsicles.

After Dollar Tree I wanted to check out the shoes they had in the store next to Dollar Tree. I ended up buying a pair. Tom warned me that since we had been in the States for less than a day and I had spent more than 25$ that I would probably have to pay duty. When we got to customs they had us park and go inside. He asked me for my driver's license and when I told him that I didn't have one, he asked how I drove there without a license. I guess he wasn't really thinking because Tom was standing right beside me. What he really wanted was anything that had my address, which I didn't have. Anyway all the fuss involved in paying duty distracted the customs officers from something they seemed to be obsessed with; the fact that Tom lives in Quebec but has a Vermont license plate. These custom agents seem to have a problem putting two and two together (I don't have a drivers license so therefore I must be the one driving and there is no reasonable explanation as to why Tom lives in Quebec but has VT plates). It also distracted them from asking Tom why he was still living in North Hatley. This is something he's allowed to do until his student visa is up but they have been bitchy about him being in Canada during the summer before and they acted like they didn't believe that Bishop's offered courses in Computer Science in the summer (which they do and he was taking one of them). We regular drive away from Canada customs making fun of the customs agents.

We'll be making another trip to Vermont on Sunday to have lunch with Tom's parents for their anniversary. Who knows what the customs agents will accuse of us of next time.

Update

Tom and I are currently in a holding pattern in North Hatley. We are waiting either for his immigration paper work to come in or for my semester to start. Our days currently consist of just hanging around the house and relaxing. I've been walking pretty much everyday and Tom joins me from time to time. I've also been spending far too much time watching Scott's Dawson's Creek DVDs. Luckily (or unluckily) he only has two seasons of it right now so soon I'll have to find something else to watch. I've also been preparing for my first semester with no courses. This will also be the first time in my life that I've ever had school in the summer (not counting the two summers when I participated in the summer language bursary program at University of Montreal and UQAM; those were more fun than schoolwork). In preparation of the start of the semester, I have been reviewing my notes on representation theory of finite groups.

I think it confuses people when

they ask me "Anglais ou Francais?" and I answer "Anglais".

Back to Blogging

On April 28th, the day after my exams were done, it occurred to me that I should blog more. This was because I had more time on my hands since I'm between semesters and also I noticed that Stacey had taken my off her blog roll. I asked Tom how long it would be before my blog would be back up and he said he wasn't sure. It was time to bring back my temporary blog. At one point in the afternoon my sister, my aunt, my uncle and I were outside talking. My mother comes out of the house with a paper Eddie Bauer bag and shows us what was inside. It was our almost 20 year old cat, Jen. At that point my uncle yells at my mother "Connie!" (which didn't scare the cat at all since she is pretty much deaf). My mother asked "What?" and my uncle replied "Don't let the cat out of the bag!".

This must break some kind of rule in television...

During the last few minutes of Prison Break tonight, they played the music from the title sequence of House. is to promote more environmentally friendly ways of travelling (like public transit, riding a bike, walking or carpooling). STO (Société de transport de l’Outaouais) has not only been advertising this day but they also have a special offer to encourage people to use public transit. They are offering a 2 for 1 special. If you have a bus pass, or pay the fare (with cash or a bus ticket), you can have a friend join you free of charge. I like this promotion because I think a lot of people don't appreciate how easy, economical and environmentally friendly taking the bus is.

More Toothbrush Shopping

Since I had bought an obsurd amount of toothbrushes the last time they were on special for 99 cents, I wasn't planning on buying anymore. I see people mismanaging their money all the time and I've been directly affected by someone who can't manage their finances. Also my roommate and I were ranting about it just the other day. This is something that annoys the crap out of both of us. So I thought I'd share a few things I know about saving money.

Food
-Aim to spend about 1$ or less on each meal. This actually isn't very hard. A box of Kraft Dinner is about a dollar and for a lot of people half a box is one meal. There are a lot of other meals for under a dollar too. Toast is a cheap breakfast. Also don't buy too much pre-made stuff like lasagna or pizza. This will cost you a lot more than just making it yourself. I make a homemade chili that costs about 60 cents a serving.
-Pick up the flyers for the grocery stores and make a list according to what's on special. When you go grocery shopping, stick to the list you made.
-Buy the generic brand instead of the name brand. This will save you money and most of the time you aren't sacrificing taste.
-Don't waste food. When deciding what you should eat, look at what's going to spoil first and then plan you meal around those items.
-Avoid going to restaurants. It is way cheaper to eat at home (especially if you are sticking to the dollar a meal rule). When you do go to restaurants, order only water to drink and tip no more than 15%. -Don't pay for water. If you don't like the taste of the tap water buy a Brita water filter.
-Buy some things in bulk. For instance Kraft Dinner is cheaper at Costco (0.84$ per box). But don't assume everything in bulk is a deal because a lot of things aren't. Be sure to work out the unit prices.
-If you are overcharged speak up. The law in Quebec (and maybe Ontario now) is that if you are charged the wrong price at store that scans in the price, you get the item for free if it's under 10$ or if it's more than 10$ you get 10% off (the only exceptions to this rule are alcohol and cigarettes, these items have a minimum price allowed by law).
-Return cans and bottles for deposit. Throwing these in the garbage is like throwing your money away and if you are going to do that, can you throw it in my direction? The money, not the cans.

Transportation
-If public transportation is available, don't buy a car. I worked out the math and not having a car is a HUGE savings. If I have a bus pass every month for the next 10 years, it will only cost me 7 800$ (in Gatineau the bus passes are 65$ a month for adults) which is way less than a car. And if I continued to buy a bus pass and my monthly bus ticket to Sherbrooke (88$ round trip) to visit Tom for the next 10 years that would cost me 18 360$. If you bought a car for 15 000$ and after 10 years you sold it for 2000$, that's 13 000$ you spent to own the car. So far the bus pass and the bus ticket costs 5 360$ more than the car. But if you divide that number by 10 years and then divide that by 12 months, you get 44.67$. Meaning for a car to be as inexpensive as my bus ticket and bus pass you must, on average, spend less than 44.67$ a month on a car. So you can't spend more than 44.67$ on gas, insurance, registration, and repairs/maintenance. I've never owned a car before but that sounds mighty impossible. I didn't take into account the regular increase in the bus pass and bus ticket price but I also didn't take into account the increase of gas prices over time and the increase in the cost of repairs. I'm making the assumption that these things will cancel each other out which I think is a fair assumption to make.
-If you have to own a car, make as few trips as possible. This will save you gas and wear and tear on your car. Plan you trips so that you don't get lost and try to do several errands during one trip with the car.
-Do preventative maintenance on your car to avoid bigger (and more expensive) problems later.

Entertainment
-Don't go to movies in the theater. Rent them, it's cheaper.
-Gamble responsibly. Only gamble with money you can afford to lose.
-Avoid expensive hobbies.
-Drink before going to the bar and buy one or zero drinks there. It saves a lot of money. Also beer is cheapest. But if you don't like beer drinking before going to the bar is good enough.
-Eat before going to sporting events, concerts and movies. The prices at these venues are outrageous.
-You don't need to spend money to have fun.

Education
-If you are financing your education with loans, spend as little money as you can. Anything you manage to save, can be used later to pay off your loan.
-Don't buy a computer. You can use the computers at school. I have never owned a computer and I wouldn't have one now if Tom hadn't lent me one of his.
-Buy used books or buy books online. The on campus bookstore is a huge rip off.
-Shop around for the cheapest school supplies in August. This is when the best deals are.
-Finish your schooling on time. Avoid failing classes. This will save you a significant amount of money. And if you are on Quebec Loans and Bursaries and you finish on time (and get a bursary every year of your post secondary education) you can apply for loan remission and they will take 15% off of your loan. I qualified for this for CEGEP, my bachelors and my masters and they've taken off about 5 000$ off my loan.

Housing and Household stuff
-If you can, have a roommate. This reduces the amount you pay for an apartment by a lot.
-Don't get renters insurance if you don't have anything valuable.
-If you are paying for heat and hydro, don't waste electricity. Turn things off when you aren't using them and don't take excessively long showers.
-Buy used furniture.
-Buy reusable things. Don't buy things like paper plates.
-Recycle because then you end up using less garbage bags.
-Don't be constantly changing your cloths. This makes extra laundry which you have to pay for.
-Don't use the dryer to dry laundry (except maybe towels and comforters). Instead invest in a drying rack. Mine cost about 10$ and paid for itself in no time.
-Only have basic phone service (and maybe a good long distance plan).
-Don't have cellphone and a land line. I think if you are going to talk a substantial amount and make long distance calls regularly, a land line is cheapest (I could be wrong, I've never looked into getting a cellphone).

General
-Small things add up. For instance, if you buy a 2$ coffee (I don't buy coffee but I don't think I overestimating the cost) everyday of your undergrad, you will end up spending 1040$. If you have a student loan this is money you could use towards that and instead make you own coffee at home.
-People these days say too many things are necessities when they are actually luxuries. Evaluate these things a little more realistically.
-To steal a phrase from Dr Phil, set yourself up for success. For instance, don't go to school and not pack a lunch or bring some kind of snack to tie you over until you get home. Because you'll end up buying something overpriced at school. When I lived off campus, I always made sure that I had granola bars in my school bag. Every so often I would toss a handful in and I had something to eat at school that didn't cost me that much. Also set yourself up for success by not going shopping when you don't need anything. By just looking, you risk buying.
-Avoid service charges and avoid late fees. These are just a waste of money. Also pay off credit cards and loans as fast as you can. The interest on these things is also a waste of money.
-Question every purchase and determine if you really need it.
-Have price limit in mind for certain items and stick to it.
-Always shop around. Know your prices.
-Research major purchases over 50$ to make sure you know what you're buying and are getting the best thing for you and your budget.
-Make a budget and stick to it.
-Write down every purchase.
-Put off purchases when you can. Sometimes you realize you don't need those things when you put them off.
-Be careful about lending money to people. And when you do, get in writing how much you lent them and a payment schedule
-Have money saved up in case you lose your job or if the bank or government decides to not give you a loan. You never know when these things might not be around to help you out.

These all might sound like common sense but I see tons of people not following any of them.

Scott's book club

I've recently realized that I must have signed up to be a member of Scott's book club at some point. For the past two summers, I've exclusively read books recommended by Scott and lent to me by Scott. Last summer I read The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons (both by Dan Brown). And this summer I've read A Beautiful Mind and The Code Book. I have yet to be even slightly disappointed by one of his recommendations.

Happy Birthday to Me, yesterday

Yesterday was my 25th birthday (you already knew this if you read Tom's blog). At midnight I got my presents from Tom. He gave me an iPod shuffle, an iPod shuffle battery pack and an iPod USB power adapter. I was really surprised and I really like it.

To celebrate my birthday, Tom and I went to my parents place in Venosta. We arrived before lunch and stayed until after dinner. My mother made me one of my favorite cakes, a jell-o cake. Tom and I had a good visit in Venosta. When we returned to my apartment there was a little package on the table with my name on it. I didn't have a clue who it was from. So I opened it up and it was a nylon bag that said "Les appartements Jacques Cartier". Apparently my apartment building gives birthday presents to it's tenants (nothing expensive or personalized, of course).

This is by far the stupidest thing I have ever heard (and I've heard a lot of stupid shit).

I got an email today from one of the secretaries at Carleton. It was a mass email sent to all graduate students. In the email it says that "you must be a fully funded graduate student to apply for a TA". How does that even make a little bit of sense? So graduate students who receive any where from 15 000$ to 17 500$ per year in grants for going to school are the only ones who can apply for a teaching assistant position where you can make an extra 8000$? Let me say it again, how does that even make a little bit of sense? This is really dumb.

Home from our travels

Tom and I arrived home from Lefroy, Ontario on Wednesday afternoon. We had been visiting my two friends (and former roommates), Dave and Crystal. See Dave's description of our visit here. See Tom's description of our visit here.

We had a really good time. We went to Niagara Falls. We saw the falls (of course) and walked around a little while Dave was looking for a geocache that proved to be impossible to get to. We also went to Ripley's Believe It or Not. Earlier in our visit to Niagara Falls we had lunch at Denny's. I have never been so disappointed by a restaurant in my life. I had Zesty Nachos and Dave and Tom each had the sampler. I was only able to eat about half of the nachos because there was so much grease on them that half of them were soggy. And Tom and Dave were both disappointed with the sampler. Not only were we disappointed but the prices were obsurdly high. For Tom and I, it was about 40$ (including tip) and we only ordered appetizers! Never again will I eat at Denny's.

A good portion of our visit was spent geocaching with Dave (see Dave's description of what it is here). We had a good time working out the puzzles and searching for them even if we weren't successful with all of them.

We also went to Wonderland. We had fun, went on some awesome rides, avoided long line ups (for the most part) and managed to not get sunburnt (applying sunscreen 3 times probably helped).

And finally on Wednesday morning Dave, Tom and I had lunch with my friend Sara at Cora's (aka Chez Cora's in Quebec). It was good to see her since last time I did was at Dave and Crystal's engagement party and that is now over two years ago.

Why I love Jon Stewart....

Tonight on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Jon Stewart pointed out how ridiculous it is that people are referring to what happened with Flight 358 as a miracle. He first quoted the definition of miracle ("An event that appears inexplicable by the laws of nature and so is held to be supernatural in origin or an act God"). He comically pointed out that if anything was an act of god it was the lightning strike and that it was satan's work that saved them. But his real point was why can't we give credit to the flight attendants, the pilots and the passengers for acting appropriately in an emergency situation.

Paying with a cheque.... whaaaaat?!?!

Last month when Tom and I were visiting with some of his friends in Vermont, one of Tom's friends decided to buy a t-shirt at JC Penney. She opened up her wallet which had her cheque book in it and started writing the cashier a cheque. I don't know about anyone else, but this seemed really foreign to me. I can't imagine going into Zellers or Walmart or any store and trying to pay with a cheque. I'm sure that this is because we have interac here in Canada and they don't in the states. But it's still weird.

Travelling

The last two weeks Tom and I have been doing some travelling and visiting people. We went to Venosta to visit briefly with my parents and pick up Tom's car. We were in Williamstown, VT to visit with Tom's parents and a few of Tom's friends. We had a belated birthday dinner for Tom with his parents at a restaurant called Julio's in Montpelier, VT (where we first tried Magic Hat #9 beer). Then on the weekend of July 22nd to 24th we went to East Norwalk, CT to visit Tom's uncle Fred and aunt Nancy. We went sailing and had some lobster. We had a really good time. The following Wednesday Tom and I went to St Johnsbury to have lunch with his aunt Bernie, who was visiting from Staten Island and other aunts and uncles I had not met before. Then on July 30th we went to Tom's parents place to have lunch with Tom's parents, his aunt Bernie and Tom's sister Pam (the only sibling of Tom's I had not met). In the afternoon, Tom and I decided to take his parents row boat out to Rood pond. And finally yesterday, Tom and I, on our way back to Hull stopped in Montreal to drop off the last of the stuff for my sister. We get a short break from travelling until Friday when we head off to Lefroy, Ontario where we'll visit with my former roommates, Dave and Crystal.

Temporary Blog

Since my blog has been down for a while and I don't know when it will be back up again, I decided to create a new one to fill the void until my old one is fixed.

More posts to come.
