Who killed the electric car?

Along with An Inconvenient Truth, I want to see Who killed the electric car? I'm putting my money on big oil as being the culprit.

I saw part of a Jon Stewart interview with the author, but I didn't even realise that they had made a film on it!

I remember the author saying that they went in a helicopter looking for all the recalled electric cars and found them being crushed at some plant in the desert in Arizona.

I think GM considers this a case of euthanasia.

The "electric wagon" actually predates the internal combustion engine. Petroleum was just found to be more practical.

The electric car does have environmental problems, especially when considered on a mass production scale. Mainly batteries - The Acids and alkalines used in Batteries are quite toxic, and as you know, people are stupid and tend to just throw batteries out. What happens when a person drives into a brick wall? Battery acid all over the place!

Significant social (or technological) changes need to take place before the technology will be practical. There is no real alternative for gas combustion in my opinion. People just have to start driving less, or new technologies need to be found that have less and less impact on the environment.
